David Harrison is available for weddings as a good luck charm, wearing the traditional top hat, black overalls and workman’s clogs.
The custom is said to go back to a chimney sweep that lost his footing and fell from a roof. He got caught on the gutter, hanging by his foot, when a girl whose hand was intended for another, reached through the window and pulled him in, saving his life. They then fell in love and were later married.
Sweeps are known as symbols of good fortune. It is lucky to see a sweep on the way to church or to see a brush emerge from a chimney.
The booking is usually a surprise to the bride and groom from their parents or family friends.
